The iMac will yield a score around 16,000 whereas your MBP will come in around 7200 or so. Let's look at the Geekbench stats and say you're running a later i7 quad core on your iMac versus the proposed set up. Will it perform on the level of your iMac? Not even close especially with large files/multiple layers. It depends on what do you mean "run"? With sufficient memory (16gb) and a fast SSD, it will "run" fine. Would a 13" MBP with a dual core i5 be sufficient to run PS and LR. Think about your purchase as something that needs to be able to last say - 5 years - and think about what you might want to do with it in the future - if 4 or 8k video editing is on your landscape then you will need the top spec."

You will be able to upgrade the SSD later if you wish - or buy the 2TB as I did. The final and most expensive upgrade is SSD - will 512GB be enough for you. It would be difficult and expensive to upgrade this later. The 2.9GHz CPU upgrade adds extra horsepower which is good for photo and video editing - its only 180GBP for this option and so I bought it.

Now if I was not quite as liberal is I and thinking of buying a MBP 2016 - I would but the 15 inch and the top version because this gives you the best GPU - 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz 16GB 2133MHz memory, 512GB PCIe-based SSD1, Radeon Pro 455 with 2GB memory.įor an extra 90GBP - you can up the GPU to the Radeon Pro 460 with GGB memory and this is a good choice at 1st build. So I applied the same though to the MBP 2016 i bought - which I expect to be on the leading edge of what I need for 4-5 years.

My MacPro will last and support my needs for a long long time - I for one was happy Apple has deferred the release of the new MacPro for at least another 12 months - I am still getting great use out of my 2013 edition. I gave my MBP to my nephew when I replaced it with the 2016 MBP and he edits videos with it - so it is fine. Both my MacPro and previous MacPro's were first edition releases and I bought the top possible spec. So I buy the highest (and often TOP) spec I can afford at the time. My approach with Apple is linked to the fact that upgrading them later is close to impossible. "Since we and probably you do not know what you will be doing in the future it s difficult to say. Here is the "advice" I just posted in response to another similar question.

As you can see below I went for 2 TB so that I had enough space for 2 weeks of shooting and rough processing on a typical trip. The other "problem" with the 13" is the limited size SSD and GPU on offer. You can of course use and external monitor, but I use my MBP 2016 in the field in Africa and similar places where carrying a screen is not easy. My main iMac is where id be doing most of my work and thats a power beast.īUT - I struggle to edit / post process on a 15 inch screen - so I would question the size. Would it be good enough to just run Photoshop and Lightroom? Hi guys just wanting to know if the MacBook Pro 13" (GHz) - 2.9 - Intel Core i5 - Intel Iris 550
